The Lowcountry...Land of Pluff Mud.
After telling a few people the name of my new business I was met with confused looks. So! I thought it was high-time I explain the PLUFF in Pluffcountry, yes one word, Pluffcountry.
If you ever visit Charleston or anywhere in the Lowcountry and see the marsh at low tide, breathe in...that beautiful , sweet, pungent odor is Pluff Mud! A rich, dark brown mixture of everything ever decomposed to the bottom of back creeks and cricks. Sure, other places in the U.S. and world have the same mud, but only from Georgetown, S.C. to Hilton Head is the name Pluff Mud solely owned.
Several articles have been written about it, so here are some links from a Southern Living article written by By Stacey Leasca on April 23, 2019 and a Charleston Magazine article by Buff Ross in February 2014. They did a stupendous job, and I hope you enjoy them.
The only thing I would argue with in those articles is the "bad" odor description. After several hundred hours on the water and even being stuck once, or twice, in the pluff, it is now a smell as fine as the sweetest perfumes, and one that will always be near and dear to me. Its just another thing that makes the Lowcountry so special.
